AmeriCorp Summer Position Description:
CHC Youth Leadership/Computer Learning Center Specialist—East Bay

Term of Service: June 1, 2008-August 30, 2008
Compensation: $4,500 stipend for a minimum of 450 hours of service, $1,250 AmeriCorp educational award, and training and support through Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).

Overview: Citizens Housing Corporation (CHC) is a non-profit organization established in 1992 to increase and preserve affordable housing opportunities for low-income Californians. The CHC Resident Services goal is to assist residents in maintaining their housing by providing outreach, referrals and information, community building opportunities, and support between residents, community service providers, and property management (PM) staff who together promote the well-being of families, the housing community, and the surrounding neighborhood. Under the supervision of the CHC South Bay Resident Services Coordinator, the full time Summer AmeriCorps member will be responsible for building and providing a youth leadership program by working closely with local community leaders and resource staff, youth, parent volunteers, and the property management staff.

Duties and Responsibilities: The full time AmeriCorp member is responsible for assisting the Resident Service Coordinator in developing and implementing the youth leadership program at Las Palmas/Surf Family Apartments in San Leandro, California. This program will be a model for youth leadership programs at other CHC housing communities. Additional hours in community or team meetings as needed.
1) Research, develop, document and recommend ongoing youth leadership programming that uses the computer learning center as one of many resources;
2) Assist with Computer Learning Center use and planning;
3) Assist in recruiting resident services volunteers;
4) Attend staff meetings, AmeriCorps member trainings, and other necessary meetings; and
5) Assist with other Resident Services responsibilities as needed.

Minimum Qualification:
? Ability to work independently with minimum supervision;
? Be 18 years of age or older;
? Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident;
? Have a high school diploma or GED certificate;
? Excellent verbal and organizational skills;
? Work well with community groups;
? Independent and reliable transportation;
? Patient, compassionate, and flexible and; and
? Strong computer skills and comfort-level.

Desired Qualifications:
? Experience working directly with children and low income families;
? Experience working on youth leadership and child abuse prevention issues;
? Excellent written and oral communication skills;
? Resident of Alameda Counties or nearby counties;
? Experience and understanding of the different cultures and ethnic groups and;
? Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
